  1. The magazine cover kind of makes you think Oprah is one of the richest Americans, right? Looking forward to your comments :)

  2. When I read the list of the 400 richest people in America, I was fairly shocked because I had figured that the amount of wealth wouldn't be just pointed toward the men. Out of the first 100, I believe only 1 of them was a woman. That was what surprised me because women work just as hard as men do, so they deserve equal pay.

  3. I was surprised that ther was 1 black person and 1 Indian person in the top 400 list

  4. I was surprised that there was more white people then black people, and also that there are more males then females. Also I'm surprised that there were no athletes because I would imagine they would get payed a lot more money then these people get payed, then again it depends what you do for a living.

  5. I was not surprised at the amount of white males and just the males in general in the top 400. I was also not surprised at the small percentage of Asian males on the list. What I was surprised with was just how few African Americans were on the list. I was expecting a couple more. Although I was pleasantly surprised on the amount of women on the list. I was only expecting two or three, so to see more of that was awesome. And let's not forget the staggering amount of money these people make. That was way above what I thought it was going to be.
The cover was right about one thing, the one African American female, seeing as there was only one.. Oprah Winfrey. Otherwise, it was accurate.

  6. I was surprised about the four hundred richest people for a few reasons. One reason why is because there were a lot more white women than I expected there to be. I believe that women and men should be equal so I'm glad that there were a lot of women, it was just a little surprising. I was also surprised because I didn't know that the equality between races was this much of an issue. In the top four hundred, I saw mostly white men and women. Though there were some people of other races, I expected there to be more. I wasn't surprised that there were mainly white men because out of all races and men or women, they get the greatest benefits when it comes to income, ect.

  7. Wow...Before reading the list I immediately thought that it would comprise of mostly either Asian or white guys. After reading it though I was shocked that over three hundred of the four hundred people where white! Sadly though most were males, as I expected. I also noticed that there were far fewer Asians than I thought there would be as well as more females then I had previously thought. Sadly though, as I expected, there weren't many Hispanics or African Americans. Fewer still of females of that race. That was my reaction to the top four hundred richest people.

  8. What I find sad is that even going through the first page you can clearly see that there are no dark skinned persons within the top 100. I'm not surprised by this, nor am I surprised by the fact that it's mainly middle aged white males.

My predictions were that there would be no women near the top, mostly because women only make .77 cents on the dollar compared to men, so all women would come after the men in most cases.

The magazine cover is interesting because you can tell the publishers attempted to show diversity by having Oprah while also just putting her there because she is one of the most favored women in the United States. But the other two men are white.

  9. My first predictions were that the chart would be dominated by rich, Caucasian men. This was proven easily, considering that any women, Hispanics, and African Americans looked like little specs in the sea of white males. I, however, predicted that African Americans, Hispanics, and women would all start appearing towards about rank 25 on the chart. This was true with women, with the 23rd spot being held by a female. However, those of races other than white didn't appear until way farther down on the list.

The proportions that I guessed were correct. I assumed that Caucasian men would hold about 80% to 85% of the list. This, of course I didn't take the time to calculate out all of the percentages, was proven true, with the other races and gender comprising the other 15%.

In the end, I was not surprised. People talk about these things all the time. Throughout history, white men have held the most privilege and power. And, although the women and other races have fought for a more equal playing field, white men are still seen as higher and better than others in competition for the same jobs.

The cover is actually quite deceiving, but I am not surprised that it was done. A more accurate cover would be twenty of those white men in suits. If they are trying to diversify the rankings, they might as well just change the data. Oprah has a tiny 2.9 billion compared to Gates' 72 billion. Those two don't even touch each other wealth-wise. The cover is meant to make people believe that the Fortune 400 is diverse and interesting when its really all white men involved in one business or the other.

  10. After looking over the Forbes 400 richest people I was very surprised at the racial inequality in the list. I was expecting the list to contain mostly white men and women, but not as many as it actually did! There was a very small percentage of African American men or women. By skimming the list I saw maybe only two or three African Americans on the whole list. I predicted before looking at this list that it would consist of mostly white men, but I was surprised to see the amount of women on this list as well because of the inequality the United States has in gender. Also, like the cover suggests I would have thought to see Oprah higher on the list but she was all the way down at 184. I already knew that Bill Gates and Buffet would be the two richest so that did not surprise me that they were one and two. So because of the cover, I thought Oprah would be higher but it also shows the two richest men in America as well. It portrays that the list would have more African Americans than it actually did as well.

  11. When I saw the cover for the Forbes 400 i could already tell it was going to be a list mainly consisting of white men.The reason i could tell this from the cover; Oprah. Of course they put her, the most well known wealthy black woman on the cover. It was like a desperate cry saying, "Look! Diversity!" and yet everyone knows that when they open that magazine they will find page after page of white men. One thing I was surprised about was how much white men had dominated the list. I had expected them to make up a great percent of the list but not 75-80% Its sad to see the uneven wealth distribution in america, especially when i comes to races.

  12. Hey Mr. Cass Its me Jon.
I was surprised when I saw that there were more white men on the list than women or different races. I honestly think that it is unfair that white men have a better chance of making more money than other races or genders.

  13. As I had guessed the list consisted of mostly males and mostly white people. I was very shocked however that they had put Oprah on the cover yet she wasn't even in the top 100. I guess they had put her on the cover to make it seem fair that there were men as well as women and white people as well as black people.

    1. Good. Shock seems like an appropriate response to being mislead. Yes, Oprah is the wealthiest Afircan American and she's on the list, but 184th doesn't seem to warrant being on the cover to me either.

  14. When I read the list of the richest people in America I was shocked that it was mostly men. I thought there was going to be more woman. also I was surprised they were pretty much all white I really thought there would be more Asians and black people. And I didn't know Oprah was that rich that really shocked me.

  15. I am not the least bit surprised to see that it was mostly white men who dominated the 400 list. I believe that they mislead you to believe, on the cover, that the list was going to be diverse and full of different races and genders. Name after name, person after person, it was usually a white man after white man. Oprah, who appears on the cover, isn't even in the top 100. It is very upsetting that our country fuels itself on inequality and isn't focusing on social matters such as women not getting paid as much as men, or Latinos not getting treated in different workplaces fairly. I believe that the human race needs to open it's eyes. It did not surprise me at all, and not until there is equality between all men and women, races and life choices, I will continue to stay unimpressed with these issues about equality. America needs change.

    1. I find this inequality appalling as well, but you always need to be careful about jumping to conclusions about what causes this sort of inequality. There were very few Latinos on the list, and I suspect they do suffer some workplace discrimination, but the absence of one group on the list by itself is not enough evidence to presume we know why that inequality is occurring. We'll definitely talk about this more, and I look forward to hearing your voice in the conversation.

  16. After reading the 400 list I was very surprised about a couple things. One thing I was not surprised about is that the majority of the list of 400 people are white males. I was surprised though at how little african americans were on the list. Because of the cover I was expecting Oprah to be one of the first few, but she ended up being number 184. I think they chose to make the cover the way they did so that they could shock people. Another thing I was very surprised about was the lack of women on the list. Although there were some, I think this list proves the difference between males and females in our country, whether it's in the way that they are paid or just how equal they are in general, this list really shows the inequality in our country.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Before reading the 400 list I expected there to be mostly white men on the list. We are blinded with the thought that America is all equal. Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics are paid less and treated differently than we are. We all need to wake up and look deeper into this issue so we can fix it and actually create equality in America.

    ReplyDelete
  18. After going through this article I was unbelievablely surprised at the fact that only 1 out of every 100 of the richest people are women. We say that equality runs freely in this country, but how come women still make 70 cents to a man's dollar? This is crazy to think about. I assumed that there would be at least 100 women in the list, but this is just out there. I'm actually taken back by this news. Something has to be done about thus. We are in the 21st century! You'd think by now a country built on freedom, would actually be equal.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Now that I've looked at the list Im surprised about a few things. First of all, I did expect the majority of the list to be white, but it was really surprising that I saw only two African Americans on that list, one of which was very low. In fact, I didn't really see any other race other than just white people. On another note, I did see a lot more women than I expected which is good, but they are still all white which shows that race is a factor in all of this. Then, looking at the cover, you might think Oprah would be really high on the list, but compared to the richest Americans she is pretty low. It's like the cover is trying to tell us that race doesn't determine who the richest people are while the facts are telling a different story.

Third time writing this comment - pressing preview is a bad idea.

  20. This was not the first time that I have looked at this list of the 400 richest Americans. Even the first time I saw the list I was not surprised that the list was comprised of mostly white males. Even though there are a good amount of girls on the list a good portion of them inherited the money that they now have. Another not very surprising fact about this list is that there are not many African Americans. What did you expect? It was only a few decades ago that we didn't even go to school with African Americans. Until 1967 interracial marriage wasn't even allowed in the United States. You can't expect many African Americans to have a lot of money when they weren't even allowed to have the same jobs as white males fifty years ago. The low level of diversity on this list is sad but not surprising.

  21. Before reading the top 400, I was expecting there to be a lot more woman and more African Americans. The whole list was basically all white men with the occasional woman. There were what, 2 African Americans? I was just expecting more races on this list. Definitely more women too. I am appalled.

  22. I was surprised by the list, but at the same time i wasn't. I had expected the list to be mainly male oriented, but when i noticed that there were only two African Americans i couldn't help but be a little shocked. I was glad to see however that there were a greater number of females than i had expected to be on the list. But i guess that's an issue inside its self that i expected them to mostly be white males, proving that equality isn't necessarily a thing in the United States.

  23. Looking at the 400 richest people in america it was mainly white people at the begning of the list i think this shows about how the rich people tend to be white rather than them being african american its weird because theres nothing wrong with having a different skin color all that matter is what there are inside not there skin color people in this world are way to judgement over everything and even at the littlest things it must be hard for african americans because even if they are the nicest people in the world people will still steriotype them no matter what.

  24. When I read this list I wasn't surprised when I saw that the majority of the list consisted of while males. I was expecting when I opened the list to mainly see white males, but I also thought that there may be more black males and women on the list than there were. While I was reading through the previous comments a lot of people made good points on how white males have been able to build up wealth for a long time and as black males, black women and even white women weren't even able to have the same high paying jobs as white males have been able to have throughout history.

  25. After reading this article I was mostly surprised by how the 400 richest people were mostly made up of middle aged white men... I predicted there to be a large amount men, but also expected there to be a little mix of races though out the list, as there wasn't. Forbes had very few African Americans and also woman. Woman are also scattered throughout the list, but a majority of them are categorized with their families. We're lead to believe that our country has equality, but does it really?

  26. Before looking at the list I had expected there to be mostly white males, and of course that's practically all that was on the list. There was more females on the list than I had expected there to be. What caught my attention was the age of the people on the list. Most of them were very old. I think the youngest person on the list was 29.

  27. When looking at the cover with two white older gentlemen and a Black female it gives you the thought that oh wait there is some diversity. Then once I started to read the list it came across to me that most of the list is older white gentlemen. This inst really that big of a shocker to me just because it seems to be the way that we view as a society the wealthier people. Within the top ten there are only two women, they and all of the males within the top ten are white. This really shoes that inst much gender equality in the work force between men and women. There also isn't diversity from what i looked at the first African American on the list doesn't appear until number 184. This is really a problem and shoes that there is not equality nor diversity.

  28. When i looked at the list of 400 richest people i was surprised but not very surprised. i expected most of them to be white or Asian males just off of the richest people Ive learned about but was amazed how few blacks and Hispanics were actually on the list. i did notice that their was a fair number of white women on the list but basically no black or Hispanic women or men which made the cover with Oprah a black women herself totally false portrayal of the contents of the list. i think that the only thing this list accomplishes is furthering the stereo types that white males tend to have more money and success then other color males which shouldn't be the case because skin is just the outside.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I was pretty shocked that there was way more white males the black males. and there was also not a lot of girls that were rich compared to the males but we can manage or money better so i guess that's why haha

  30. It's interesting to see that in the top 10 of the 400, 4 of those people are in there because of Wal Mart. Besides that I was not surprised to see that the list was consistent of all white men, and the cover of the magazine was a little misleading with a black woman on the cover because I saw almost no people that weren't white.

  31. I was really surprised that women and non-whites were so high up on the list, I expected them to be a of lower ranking on the list.

  32. Looking at the list i was confused why the cover had a black women when there were only like 10 women and no black people in the top 50. I was also shocked at how many white males there were. I thought that there was going to be more black people or women higher up on the list.

  34. I was not surprised to see that the top riches people were white men. It does not seem fair to me that it is this way. I was surprised to see how many people were rich that were white compared to black. This made me angry because that doesn't seem fair. I predicted that there were going to be just as many rich whites as there are of blacks. The cover was completely miss leading. The cover shows that the black lady in the middle is equal to the two white men on each side of her. When going into the magazine you really have to scroll and look for a black women or man.

  36. Over looking the 400 richest people in America I was surprised that out of the top 20 there was only one person that was under thirty years old, also the top 100 people were all white. On the cover they try to make you to think that the list is going to have some diversity, but in reality inequality still exists in America. To be completely honest i wasn't surprised to notice that the list was mostly males, the country is practically run by men, Even Oprah who appears to be on the cover isn't even in the top 100. The list shows that race and gender matters to be successful.

  37. The thing I am most surprised about is that sports athletes aren't on this list that much. You would think that with how much they get paid to play a game they would be higher or even on the list. I was also surprised that the 1st black person was in the 140s or something. Its mostly old white guys that have been around the block a few times and know what they are doing with their money.

  38. I really didnt expect that almost all of the people on the list where white men up untill Oprah in the 180's. But she was on the cover so I dont think that they put here on there because she is a very powerful woman but maybe to get some diversity on the cover so they dont look bad.

  39. What I noticed is most of the people were over the age of 50 with some exceptions. The first richest person in the world was bill gates..which wasn't a surprise.I thought he was going to be the richest person in the world. He was the first white person to show up on the list. The first woman to show up on the list was christy Walton and family. She was number six on the charts and was a white female, 59 years if age. The first Asian was Patrick Soon-Shiong who is the age of 62. He is the 45th richest person. The first black person would be Oprah Winfrey. She was 184 on the list. All of these people are over the age of 50. What surprised me is what Oprah was on the list. I thought she would be higher in the count.

  41. I was not surprised to see that a large majority of the top richest people were white men, but I was surprised to see how old the men are. Out the top 200, possibly more, there was only one man under the age of 30. I was also surprised to see how far down Oprah was on the list, 184, I thought she would be very high seeing as she is on the cover. Going along with that, there were other women who were much higher than Oprah and I hadn't even heard of them. I also thought there would be a lot more people of different races and there were hardly any.

  44. Looking at the 400 richest Americans, can't say it was much of a surprise. The first non-white person I spotted was at #45. All most all of them were men over 40. Thinking about this this make complete sense, but being in my position, I'm a bit ignorant to it. If I had seen this list without being prompted into the idea of race I probably wouldn't have thought about it. I once had a friend who was a strong headed feminist. She would find gender inequality in ever piece of media. I wonder about who sees the inequality in this right away and who in ignorant to it like me.

  45. When i read the 400 richest people in America i wasn't surprised to see that almost more than all of them were white males. There wasn't much of a diversity when it came to this list at all. What really surprised me that there was only two African Americans on the list. The magazine cover isn't a fair portrayal of the 400 richest peoples list because they're trying to make it seem as if equality and diversity is shown in the list, which it isn't. A fair portrayal of the list would be three white men, which is the majority of the list.

  46. Before I read the magazine, Forbes, I looked at the cover expecting that when I read the 400 richest people in America that I would find a variety of race and gender. I think the cover of the magazine is a fair portrayal of the 400 richest people in America because in the picture there are two white men and an african american woman. Even though there isn't a more variety of people I feel the variety they did put in the cover is enough. (You can only fit so many people on a cover of a magazine.) When I looked at the list of the 400 richest americans my predictions were definitely wrong. There wasn't as much of a variety of race and gender as I thought there would be. I was surprised to see that the top/ most of the richest people in America were white men with an exception of some woman and different raced people.

  47. I'm not surprised at all by this list. In the top 100, there are only 13 women, and out of the entire list there are not even 50 in total. What also isn't news is the fact that the entire first page is made up of white people. This list is one of the reasons that I would be willing to make the argument that racial and gender equality in America is not prevalent.

  51. When I first read the assignment I thought about the monopoly game we played in YGYM. I thought that the males would definitely be at the top of the list. I then began to think about race and how it can effect the money people receive in this world. I figured that Asian males would receive the most money and be the richest. But what I knew was that a Hispanic female would never make it into the top five due to her race and gender. Once I saw the article I was surprised because a female was in the sixth spot. This article was cool and made me think further into how race and gender can effect people.

I think the magazine cover for the Forbes Top 400 Richest Americans is fair. Just because it has Oprah on it doesn't mean anything.
